porridge is what I would call classic comedy, people who don't find this funny shouldn't ever watch comedy programmes ever again, I can see both Ronnie Barker and Richard Bekinsdale {please excuse the spelling) now entertaining up in heaven and cant wait until I see them again on the otherside

I believe Fulton Mackay's portrayal of the "old school" prison officer is based upon Lionel Jeffries similarly brilliant role as Prison Officer "Sour" Crout in the Peter Sellers film Two Way Stretch. The way both parts are played, with immaculate uniform, small moustache, hat with the peak coming down towards the eyebrows are so similar even if the Mackay role is not a direct copy, there is at least a passing nod to the Jeffries role.

Great site - perennial TV. My favourite line is when Fletcher comes down to the wing after someone has nicked his pineapple chunks: "there is a thief amongst us."

Nice site - just like to say though, that as an ardent fan of the show I wasn't at all disappointed by 'Going Straight', in fact I think it's superior to the somewhat tired third series of 'Porridge' and not only features some of Barker's best work as Fletcher but is a fascinating portrait of late 70's 'Winter of Discontent' Britain. It's a great shame in my opinion that Beckinsale's tragically early death precluded a second run.

Love this show and it seems to be a firm favourite with brits abroad too as they always seem to have it on in bars (in addition to only fools). Pitty the BBC don't make original programmes like this anymore, instead the make silly programs like "The Voice"

I came here looking for information on Brian Wilde and was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of information I found. Porridge has not been televised where I live, but it may eventually show up on our Public Television Stations.
